Portrait of the Comte de Turenne

With characteristic meticulousness, David has written the identity and address of the subject on the letter on the table, and in his signature he draws attention to the fact that the painting was done in Brussels. David spent the last ten years of his life there, having fallen from favour following the defeat of Napoleon in 1815. It was also here the painter met fellow exiles, among them Turenne, one of Napoleon’s officers.
