Here the twenty-year-old Andries van Bochoven has shown himself as a painter surrounded by his family, all awaiting dinner at a laid table. His father Rutger holds a Bible; his daughters probably hold catechisms. The painting bears the names and date of birth of each figure. Within four years of the completion of this work, Andries, his stepmother, his brother Herman, and his sister Josina had all died. The portrait remained in his father’s possession until his own death, a reminder of happier times.
