Portrait of the painter's mother, Adela Agüera y Venero (Honzayo, Santander–Madrid, October 1915), who also painted.
The painter captured his mother sitting and reading a book. She looks out at the viewer, with a surprised expression. She is wearing a black two-piece outfit that has a fitted bodice with a ruffle hem and a wide black lace neck. Her hair is in a simple and elegant updo and her only jewelry is a set of silver earrings with emeralds. Chicharro was one of the great artists of the transition between the 19th and 20th centuries. He was an excellent portraitist who became the court painter of Alfonso XII.
