Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1536-1598) was the first daimyo who made the success to unify Japan, subordinating other warlords all over this nation. After his death, Hideyoshi was deified and a great shrine "Hokokusha" was build at the Higashiyama Shichijo in Kyoto. To be the religious subjects for the worship, many portraits of Hideyoshi as a god, including this portrait in the Kobe City Museum collection, were also painted until the fall of the Toyotomi family (1615).
