Seated male figure (Judge William Gaston) facing front with head turned slightly to proper left (viewer's right); figure has short grey hair, wears a white ruffled shirt with stand-up collar, black tie and coat; figure seated on a red armchair with fabric drape behind and portion of the wall visible over subject's right shoulder. Thought to have been commissioned or bought by Francis Lister Hawks, whose son (Francis T. Hawks) married Hannah Gaston Manly, William Gaston's granddaughter. This painting was the source for an engraved image of Gaston by Asher B. Durand published in 1835 and now part of the collection at the National Portrait Gallery.
