Émile Schuffenecker played a key role in the meeting between Paul Gauguin and Émile Bernard in Pont-Aven in 1886, as well as in the group's exhibition at the Café Volpini in 1889. This pastel, a preparatory study for the portrait of Bernard now in Houston, testifies to their artistic affinity.
