A painting in the type of a French court portrait from the 16th century. The man is dressed in a caftan decorated with patches called brandenbourgs. According to the tradition maintained in the Puławy collections, it is Don Juan d'Austria (1547–1578), the hero of the Battle of Lepanto (Naupaktos) in 1571, the illegitimate son of Emperor Charles V.
There is some similarity to Don Juan, but not enough to support this traditional term. The method of painting is derived from the style of François Clouet.
