Because Belva Lockwood supported Temperance, she was often linked to leaders of the Prohibition Party, including its 1884 Presidential candidate, John St. John. Benjamin Butler, a Civil War general turned politician, was the nominee of the Greenback Party, and a supporter of woman suffrage. It is ironic that three individuals who supported many of the same positions, are seen here blaming each other for their defeat in the general election to Grover Cleveland.
