For some Americans, the train depot evoked strong emotions. To travelers departing for a journey or vacation, the depot represented the gateway to adventure, leisure, and freedom, stirring feelings of anticipation and excitement. However, the same depot often appeared differently at the end of a vacation. This postcard from the early 20th century captured such sentiment with an inscription on the reverse side: "This place looks good on the way in. But I hate to see it tonight and return to slavery."
