Prior to constructing the Million Dollar Pier, "Captain" John L. Young built Ocean Pier in 1891, and in doing so, set the standard for other Atlantic City entertainment piers. From the boardwalk, patrons boarded a trolley to the pier where they were tempted by a cacophony of games, rides, concerts, and vaudeville shows. Visitors also enjoyed fishing at the very end of the pier, which extended 2000 feet out over the ocean.
