Sonia Delaunay made this poster and card for her solo exhibition at the Parisian Galerie Bing in 1964.
She and her husband, Robert Delaunay (d. 1941) had sold works through the dealer Bing since the
1930s, and she had had an earlier solo show at the gallery in 1953. Arriving in Paris from St
Petersburg in 1905, Delaunay met many important artistic figures including Pablo Picasso, Georges
Braque, Maurice de Vlaminck, and her future husband Robert Delaunay. With Robert, she developed
the abstract painterly style of Orphism, which she pursued throughout her career. Here, bold colour
contrasts and simple abstract forms are employed in their most basic form to create graphic images to
advertise her exhibition.
