This pro-suffrage poster was designed by Emily Ford and published by the Artists' Suffrage League. The image refers to the oppressive situation of powerless women employed in factories as 'sweated labour'. A major aim of the suffrage movement was to improve the conditions of working-class women by achieving representation for them in parliament and trade unions. Without the vote women had no influence in the passing of laws that affected their lives and work.
Formed in 1907, the Artists' Suffrage League produced posters, postcards and other visual material to promote the cause of the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies.
