Toy wholesalers likely supplied posters such as this example to department stores and other dry goods retailers to advertise their toy departments. It was during the early years of the 20th century when these specialized toy departments really began to grow. It is perhaps surprising to imagine that, in the middle years of the Great Depression, such an affluent-looking family picture was taken very seriously by the consuming public. However, toymakers and retailers employed many Americans as well, and none of the toys pictured were extremely expensive. The presence of a Shirley Temple doll in this image allows us to date it post-1930.
