The gardens at Hidcote were developed by Major Lawrence Johnston between 1907 and 1948. Johnston was a keen plantsman who took part in a number of plant-hunting expeditions abroad. The gardens became run down during the Second World War and in 1948 Johnston gave Hidcote to the National Trust - the first property to be acquired by the Trust specifically for its gardens.
