From the very first days of Carl Benscheidt's factory, the powerhouse already stood in its place, built according to plans by Eduard Werner, the first architect. But sales grew quickly, and expansion was required.
So Gropius and Meyer built the new building over and around the old one, while it was still in operation! Once it was completed, the smaller building on the inside was torn down. All without the steam engine, which was sunk into the ground, or the boiler being moved or turned off!
