Prayer shawl bags like this one derive their colorful effect from the openwork case combined with a red, black or green velvet lining. This example is stamped with a hallmark used after the establishment of the French Protectorate in 1912. The Hebrew inscription reads, "Yehiya son of Raphael Ohana, May G[od] p[rotect] and [sustain him]"
