The image of the Ancient Egyptian ruler bears witness to the political stability of the Kingdom of the Pharaohs, a stability which was unique in world history. As tradition was highly valued, this form of government remained stable for centuries, just as the garments and jewellery of the Pharaohs also scarcely changed over the years. The crown of Upper and Lower Egypt and the king’s headcloth (Egyptian nemes) were the distinguishing adornments of the rulers throughout all the epochs. The erect Egyptian cobra on the brow of every member of the royal family signified the high rank and sacredness of the royal house. The characteristic dress worn by the kings consisted of a short pleated kilt (Egyptian shendshut). In spite of the close adherence to tradition, each statue allows us to recognise the individual who shaped history. The direct juxtaposition of pharaohs from two millennia makes this far-off age really come to life.
