The vessel cannot be allowed to drift off station when scientists have launched their research devices into the water, regardless of the wind and current conditions.The SONNE achieves this requirement by employing a dynamic positioning system. Two large propellers, a rotating pump jet beneath the hull, and extendable bow and stern thrusters work in concert to allow the vessel to stay precisely on station for 48 hours.
