A mounted preparatory sketch in black ink of a tiger and bamboo, date 1897. Though not found in Japan, tigers were taken over from Chinese painting and were frequently portrayed. They were said to be the only animal capable of negotiating the daunting thickets of bamboo. The combination of tiger and bamboo was a set theme in art from an early stage, representing a harmonious society and favoured by the warrior class.
