Preparatory sketch in ink and pigment of two playfully fighting lion dogs, one coloured in blue. The shishi is a mythical beast, frequently found in Japanese painting. Playful and cute, they behave like puppies, leaping and playing with each other. Their origins were more serious, as they were said to appear only in times of virtuous rule, making them a favourable symbol of a legitimate ruler.
