Preparatory sketch

In Chinese painting, the theme of a larger bird surrounded by smaller ones stood for the ruler receiving advice and warnings from those who served him. Here, five small birds swoop around and chirrup at the owl. Ishibashi is copying a painting by Katei, but has failed to achieve a naturalistic effect around the owl’s eyes.
