Preparatory sketch: Sparring Cockerels

Two cockerels play out a territorial fight in a scene suggestive of the aggression to be found in nature. Dotted lines in the mid-ground indicate the position of floating mist banks. These, together with bush peonies in the foreground and a rock to the right, provide spatial definition.
