Preparatory sketch

The horizontal composition tells us this is a design either for an album painting or a book illustration. Katei contributed a number of designs for books published during the 1880s. As was typical, this is an imagined scene, with an elaborate Chinese-style pavilion at the centre. A lone figure sits in the pleasure boat moored nearby.
