Preparatory sketch

Artists might make small-scale sketches either to record paintings they had seen, or as a record of works completed. The subjects here are pine trees by moonlight, chrysanthemum, a bird, a Chinese vase with plum blossom, a basket containing a citrus fruit and crabs in a pond. The sizes suggest paintings for an album.
