Preparatory sketch

The level of detail and careful colouring in this drawing contradicts the fact that it is only a preparatory piece. Katei specialised in depicting nature, but he never sentimentalised it: here, the rooster is eyeing up a tasty praying mantis on the ground, and two sparrows watch the scene avidly from the bamboo plant above.
