The wild goose alone in a landscape was established in Chinese painting by the tenth century, representing the scholar’s desire for a peaceful, solitary retreat within nature. The bird might be depicted in a variety of seasonal settings, either summer, autumn, or winter, as here. The graceful curve of the goose’s neck was particularly hard to capture.
