Preparatory sketch

Six crows hover in and around a stand of bamboo, accompanied by three doves and many sparrows. The combination of doves and sparrows was established as a symbol of early spring by the fourteenth century. Three sparrows engage in an energetic mid-air tussle, suggesting the conflicts within nature as well as its beauty. Some birds are densely shaded while others are richly detailed.
