The Song-dynasty scholar Ceng Zao (d. 1155) made a selection of flowers, which he named the “ten friends.” This became a popular theme in Chinese-inspired painting, in which each flower carried a symbolic meaning. Here, two of the flowers appear: olive as the “friend of resonance,” and roseleaf bramble as “the Daoist immortal friend.”
