Preparatory sketch

Katei worked in a painting style heavily influenced by Chinese models; as a young man he studied these tirelessly at every opportunity. This is a monumental landscape, with towering mountains and a lone figure at the very bottom. The inscription records that Katei was copying a work by the Chinese painter Li Mingdou.
