Preparatory sketch

In Japanese painting, artists usually included an inscription, written vertically, like all East Asian scripts. The inscription might be a quotation from a classical Chinese poem, and could also mention where the work was painted, and when. On this sheet, Katei’s lines of practice give the year, cyclical date, month, his name and age.
