There is deep respect for the elderly in East Asia, as they benefit from greater wisdom.
In Daoist belief, the elderly man known as Jurōjin (literally, ‘the long-life old man’) represents a wish for a long life. He is represented as leaning on a staff and carrying a handscroll of knowledge. See 56.50.6 for a similar composition in full colour.
