Many pictorial themes originated in word-play. In Chinese, ‘court’ and ‘waves’ sound similar, and the emblem of a crane was used on the highest officials’ rank badge, sewn onto their robes to show their status. The combination of cranes standing beside waves was therefore a wish for a young man to achieve the highest professional success.
