Preparing the dabu clay paste for the printing process

The clay paste mixture used in Bagru to safeguard the base colours of the motif from the dye bath is prepared by using a combination of kalli mitti a black mud with high clay content, beden the insect eaten waste of wheat flour, chuna lime and babool gond the natural gum of the Babool tree (Acacia Arabica Indica).

Mixed together, this combination is strenuously trampled on for several hours till it is completely amalgamated and reaches the consistency required. Water is then added to create sludgy paste and left overnight to rest. The mixture is strained through a loose weave cloth the next day and is ready for use.
