The frontispiece for Charles Lyell's 1832 Principles of Geology present a view of the Serapis temple near Naples. It was chosen to illustrate the movement of the Earth's crust, using a human marker to demonstrate the natural changes.
The columns at the centre of the image show angled lines of sediment deposit demonstrating that the ground slid below the surface of the water and later reemerged.
The Principles of Geology were published in three volumes between 1830 and 1833.
