The wisdom of local farmers on seed collecting has been passed down through generations. Farmers carefully select seed-producing crops each year. The seeds harvested from those plants are then carefully sorted to find the most suitable seeds to plant in the following year.

It is also one of the heirloom crops in Tsuruoka.
