Harry Truman was one of many US presidents who banked at Riggs National Bank, convienently located near the White House. On his last full day in office, Truman wrote a letter directing bank president Robert Fleming to take his wife’s name off their joint checking account but leave her power to sign checks. It’s unclear why. In a letter the next day, he informed Fleming that he would keep his personal account at Riggs even though he was “out of a job.”
