Three iron objects with flat surfaces and handles.

Ironing was hard work as the "sad irons" were made of solid metal, could weigh up to nine pounds, and had to be heated over a fire or stovetop. This lighter rod model, known as a goffering iron, was designed for collars on dresses and shirts. The hot ironing rod would then be placed on its stand to cool.
