An early form of the pressure cooker was the "Bavarian pressure cooker", a brown enamelled pan with lid as well as an iron clamping screw clip lock and a safety valve. The pan was decorated with a hammer and pick on the lid and clamping screw. The women's role was subordinate in the patriarchal miners' world and they were mainly left to take care of the housework. Their purpose was to ensure that the household was organised in the best way possible for the miners' recreation and recovery. However, women often had a number of different tasks. Aside from housekeeping and looking after the children, they often also ran a small farm.
