The work Pressure by Madsen and Hougs is a big doodle of light, made of a transparent tube with pixel-controlled LED inside. Reminiscent of the human brain, the work aims to illustrate the complexity of the human thought process. As light runs through the tubes of the installation creating its own life, it also urges us to reflect on ours, about what is right and what is wrong. All of these thoughts and states of mind are put under pressure, as the title of the work suggests, with their changing slow and fast-moving lines shooting through the tubes, creating a living organism that stands proud.
Pressure contains everything and nothing; it may be just a doodle in the air, something jotted down during a telephone conversation; or, it may be the neural network inside our brain, where everything seems chaotic but has a coherence.
Hans E. Madsen works primarily in the public space, with temporary and site-specific installations that often involve different kinds of lights, colored filters, and cheap materials from DIY building supply stores. He is interested in creating wondrous experiences in everyday situations and places, using readily available materials. Frederik D. Hougs is a lighting designer who programs and develops lighting designs for his own works, as well as for collaborations with artists, theatres, and other clients.
