Presumed portrait of the Duc and Duchesse de Chartres, surrounded by the Penthièvre and Conti families

The identity of this couple was long a subject of debate, but now seems established: the painting is thought to be a portrait of the Duc and Duchesse de Chartres surrounded by their family – in which case the work resembles a tribute to the dynasty of Louis XVI’s scheming cousin.
