In about 1726 Situ Panchen (1700-1774) commissioned a set of thangka paintings dedicated to the narrative of the previous lives, or Jatakas, of Buddha Sakyamuni referencing previously rarely used text, the Avadanakalpalata by Kshemendra. This painting is the third thangka in the set following the thangka depicting the Buddha Sakyamuni and another, containing the first ten stories. Around the central gold Buddha are episodes eleven through nineteen; the titles of which are: Shakra, The Brahman, She Who Drives Men Mad, Suparaga, The Fish, The Baby Quail, The Jar of Liquor, The Wealthy Prince and The Lotus Roots.
