Born in London, Dawson-Watson studied in England and Paris, then lived in Giverny from 1884 to 1890. He came to the United States in 1893, painted in New England until 1897 then began teaching at Hartford, Connecticut. Dawson-Watson also taught at Woodstock, New York, and Saint Louis, Missouri. He began living part-time at San Antonio in 1917 before moving there permanently in 1926 to enter the Texas Wildflower Exhibition. Dawson-Watson received the exhibition's first $5,000 national prize.
