The Jubilee line was officially opened on 30 April 1979. The Stanmore branch of the Bakerloo line, from Baker Street to Stanmore, was handed over in 1979. Tunnelling for the rest of the line, from Baker Street to Charing Cross, had begun in 1972. The new line was originally due to be called the Fleet Line, but this was changed in honour of Queen Elizabeth II's 1977 silver jubilee. This photo from April 1979 shows Prince Charles, Prince of Wales, in the cab of a Jubilee line train at Green Park. He later travelled to Stanmore, riding in the cab for much of the way.
