Diponegoro is Javanese aristocrat and leader in the 19th-century rebellion against the Dutch known as the Java War or Diponegoro’s War (1825–30). During those five years Diponegoro’s military accomplishments severely crippled the Dutch and earned for him a prominent place in the Indonesian nationalist list of heroes. His life story has been an inspiration to many leaders, historian and artists since.
