This sensitive portrait was painted for William Constable, of Burton Constable in Yorkshire, who was a cousin of the sitter's mother. The Scottish antiquarian and picture dealer James Byres acted as the intermediary between artist and patron, and a surviving letter from Byres to Constable records full details of the commission. A companion portrait of Princess Cecilia's husband, Prince Benedetto Giustiniani, is in a Roman private collection.
