As a specialist in the technique of portrait painting, Dubois-Drahonet was commissioned by the Bourbon family of Orleans to create nine full-length portraits of their children. The children were born from the marriage of Louis Philippe, future King of France, and Maria Amalia of Bourbon, Princess of the Two Sicilies and daughter of Ferdinando I Bourbon. The portraits were executed between 1826 and 1828.
