This image is of the driver’s view of the line with a colour light signal and central safety rail. Running trains so close together required an efficient train stop, as this might well be the only safety measure remaining should a driver be unable to stop the train. All the signals had train stops attached, which meant that if a train did pass on ‘danger’ the train’s brakes would be applied automatically and the train would stop. Two colour light signals were enclosed within a weatherproof cast iron box attached to the rails and were the first long range daylight signal system to be used in Britain.
