Maggie Lena Walker passed away on December 15, 1934 but her legacy did not die with her. Legions of followers honored Walker in the years to come by naming schools, streets, and even a movie theater after her. Perhaps no organization admired Walker more than the Independent Order of St. Luke, the fraternal organization that Walker ran from 1899 until her death. St. Luke members held multiple commemoration ceremonies for their beloved leader, whom they lovingly referred to as "our inspiration."
