Print: engraving, stipple, Newton with the Prism, published 14 April 1809, by Meadows after a painting by Romney 1796. Issued by Thomas Payne. From collection of prints after Romney amassed by the Earl of Bute (split and sold 1997). Newton seated holding a prism into a broad light beam; various apparatus in foreground. Two women present, one holding glass bottle on tray, reflected light visible. Example of imaginary romanticised 18th century historicism (Newton's light splitting experiment 1666). 19.5x27cm.
