Albert Philipps served as a Private in Company A of the 5th Regiment, MA Colored Volunteer Cavalry. He was working as a teamster, or animal driver, in Pepperell, MA when he enlisted in the 5th Cavalry in December 1863. This document documents his entitlement to a pension under the newly authorized Pension Act of 1890 for his service during the Civil War.
